Vyšehrad is situated on the rock above the Vltava River. It used to be a royal fort, which was the seat of the first Czech king Vratislav II. Legend has it the mythological prince Krok founded Vyšehrad in the 10th century. After he died, his daughter Libuše and her husband Přemysl Oráč ruled here. Also as part of the complex, there is Saint Martin Rotunda, which is Prague's oldest. Walking through a park, which is part of the grounds, you will be amazed to see the breathtaking views of Prague, the river and its surrounding area. At the Saint Peter and Paul Basilica cemetery you can walk through Slavín, where the greatest personalities of the Czech nation (such as singers, actors, poets, politicians, musicians etc.) are buried. Another legend tells us the story of the knight Horymír and his horse Šemík, which jumped over the ramparts into the Vltava River to save its master from being beheaded.
