Prague Jewish Town is a unique collection of Jewish monuments, managed by the Jewish Museum, which is the largest museum of its kind in Europe. The quarter known as Josefov used to be a Jewish ghetto, today it belongs to one of the most visited sights of Prague. We recommend that you pay for a guided tour, which will make you familiar with the main sights of the Jewish Town, including the Old-New Synagogue, the Maisel Synagogue, the Pinkas Synagogue, the Klausen Synagogue, the Spanish Synagogue and the Old Jewish Cemetery. The Old-New Synagogue is the oldest sight of Prague Jewish Town and at the same time the oldest preserved synagogue in Europe from the end of 13th century. There is a museum in the Klausen Synagogue, which will educate you on Jewish customs and traditions. This synagogue is located right next to the Old Jewish Cemetery, where 12.000 tombstones are found, including the tombstone of the scholar and educator rabbi Löw. In the Renaissance Maisel Synagogue, built by Mordechai Maisel in the 16th century, there is an exhibition today with interactive features, which will help you to learn about Hebrew manuscripts, historic plans and maps of the Jewish Town as well as its significant personalities. The interior of the Pinkas Synagogue is a sad memorial to the victims of holocaust. The walls of the synagogue bear the names of more than 80.000 Czech Jews, who lost their lives in concentration camps during World War II. Part of the synagogue is a small museum with drawings made by kids in concentration camps.
