Small, tiny, quaint and colourful houses were built in a Prague Castle backstreet as accommodation for castle shooters. Who were constructing these houses from the end of the 16th century with the approval of the emperor Rudolf II. Later the houses provided shelter for various castle employees and allegedly alchemists invited by Rudolf II. as well. The Golden Lane is so called after the goldsmiths, who had their shops there. From house number 12 you have access to Daliborka Tower, whose first prisoner was allegedly aristocrat Dalibor of Kozojedy. Dalibor played the violin in the tower - later this inspired Bedřich Smetana to write the opera Dalibor. Franz Kafka lived at house number 22 for a certain period of time and the lane was also visited by other legendary writers such as Halas, Seifert or Nezval. People lived in the houses until the end of World War II. After the war the presidential Office bought these houses and an achitect rearrangered the lane. It was painter and movie maker Jiří Trnka who provided the colourful design.
